When the oil crisis reached its peak in the early 1970s, the entire automotive industry landscape changed. From big muscle cars and Hot Rods, America turned their heads toward smaller European and Asian compact cars. GM's answer to this situation was Saturn. The idea emerged in GM's headquarters in 1982 but the brand was only officially founded in 1985. The first Saturn rolled out of its dedicated assembly line in Spring Hill, Tennessee in the summer of 1990. GM's strategy for this new brand was to emulate the Asian marketing approach. 

This "different kind of car company" was completely independent from GM's other divisions. Saturn had its own workforce, its own plant and even its own distribution outlet. The first line of Saturn models was developed using a dedicated platform, the Z-body. This platform, exclusive to Saturn, was renowned to furnish dent-proof plastic panels that could allow the production to easily change the design of the exterior. This feature proved popular among the clientele even though Saturn did not fully take advantage of the capability offered by this platform. In fact, the second generation of Saturn presented a new interior with the same exterior. Before long, GM phased out this platform in favor of one shared by other brands of the company. However, this change did not sit well with the customers and sales started to decline. Possibly GM interfered too much in Saturn's original strategy or maybe the economy was too difficult for the automotive industry at the time. The fact remains that this promising brand met its demise early in its development and along with other GM brands in the late 2000's. The first idea was to sell the brand to a competitor but the sale fell through and ultimately Saturn was phased out in 2010.
