If you think that this famous Italian company started with a 100% Italian ownership, you are mistaken. In fact, the enterprise was an initiative called SAID or Società Anonima Italiana Darracq, from French automobile firm owner Alexandre Darracq and Italian investors. From 1906 to 1909, this joint venture knew little to none recognition so by 1910 they hired a new Italian chief engineer and formed the A.L.F.A company. Soon after the foundation of this new company, the new 24 hp cars were put to test on the Targa Florio race competition.
Things changed fast for the young group and in 1915 a new entrepreneur, Nicolas Romeo, joined the company as manager. It did not take long for the business to change name once again and adopt the familiar Alfa Romeo trademark in 1920. At the time the company was building hand made luxury vehicles but experienced such financial difficulties that the government had to take over the brand.
After the Second World War, as a mean to regain profitability, the brand started mass producing small cars instead of the luxury ones they built previously. Despite this fact, the brand was without a doubt the one to beat on the various racing circuit.
Starting with the 1973 oil crisis, the company was once again having financial problems that culminated by the sale of the company to the Fiat group in 1986. The models made in the following years benefited from the rationalization of the production that Fiat could offer while still exhibiting Alfa Romeo avant-garde styling and panache.
Alfa Romeo first started importing cars in the U.S. in the 60’s but due to poor sales ended its exports in 1995. Now that the company has been restructured, the iconic Italian car made a return on the continent in 2008.
