What is a synonym of luxurious car if not Rolls-Royce? Initiated by Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce in 1904, the company was fully formed by 1906. At first, the cars were designed by Royce and distributed by Mr. Rolls. The first car presented to the public was at the Paris Salon in 1904, this first Rolls-Royce car was 10 HP. The association and the car proved to be favorable and quickly warranted the construction of a plant in Derby by 1908. 

In 1921, as a means to answer the growing demand, Rolls-Royce opened a new plant in the United States. For the ten years that the factory remained operational, Rolls-Royce produced 1 701 "Springfield Ghosts". Then in 1931, on the mainland, Rolls-Royce acquired competitor Bentley that struggled during the Great Depression. This explains the resemblances between the standard models between the two brands. In fact, they were both identical if not for the radiator grille and other minor details.

In 1946 marked the first year the Rolls-Royce was completely built in-house, coachwork included, in the new plant in Crewe. The following years were marked by the prestigious customers who ordered Rolls-Royce, as most of them were heads of state or royalty.

The company sustained a decline in sales during the ‘70s, in part because of a failed contract in the aircraft engine division of the business. As a result, the company was split in two, between the aircraft and the car segments. In 1973 the vehicle division of the business was sold to a private interest and separated from the nationalized aircraft section.

This was only the start of the multiple changes in ownership the company would endure. In 1980, Rolls-Royce was bought by Vickers plc, then in 1998 Volkswagen acquired the brand. But things were not that easy for the German constructor as the deal did not include the rights to use the "RR" insignia; rights who still belonged to the aircraft branch. As it happened, BMW who at the time had a joint venture deal with Rolls-Royce aero-engines, was awarded the licensing rights. In the end, Volkswagen kept the Crewe factory as well as the Bentley brand and sold the Rolls-Royce branch to BMW in 2003.
