Stunning Silver! Top Silver Car Colors
We truly love our car colors here at TouchUpDirect. This enthusiasm has inspired a bunch of blog posts on our absolute favorites, from the darkest black to vibrant candy colors. We even did a whole series of posts on all the different versions of gray. Now, let’s shift the spotlight to the shiny version of gray—or, as most normal people call it: silver.
Let’s Talk About Silver!
Blending the elegance of a black shade with the confidence of a white color, silver is one of the most popular car colors out there. Silver is even a constant fixture in the top five car colors sold in the United States. Despite its ubiquity, there’s something incredibly cool and unique about this color.
What is it about this shade that drives people crazy? This sleek and metallic color has an elegance and confidence that appeals to a wide spectrum of people. It’s artistic but invokes sci-fi and cutting-edge technology. It’s confident and cold but spiritual at the same time.
No wonder brands have put out so many different shades of silver. Today, we’re looking at some of the most loved silver car colors.
Tesla Midnight Silver (NEU-112E)
Rest in peace, Midnight Silver. As of 2024, this gorgeous shade of paint has seemingly been put to rest. Once given the honor of being the standard free color for all Teslas in North America, this sophisticated color is now a rare, vintage shade. Loved deeply for its darker gray hue, the Midnight Silver lives on, adorning the Teslas of all the people who got in before it was replaced with Stealth Gray. We will deeply mourn Midnight Silver’s loss until Tesla decides to revive it.
But hope springs eternal! The discontinuation of Tesla’s Midnight Silver has sparked a surge in collector interest, highlighting how car color trends can influence car rarity and desirability.
Chevrolet Silver Ice/QuickSilver/Switchblade Metallic (GAN/9W5/WA636R/WA8636/17)
Confused by the sheer amount of colors and color codes above? Yeah, us too. Let’s see if we can make our understanding of this a little better (or worse).
It’s all the same color!
Chevy, the legendary car company, is a subsidiary of General Motors, a.k.a. GM. GM, along with a penchant for renaming their colors, is also the owner of GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and the late Pontiac. As such, this color of car paint appears on the cars of a number of different GM brands from 2009 to 2023. And what are the Silver Ice Metallic, QuickSilver, and Switchblade Silver Metallic actually like? It’s nice. Very silver.
Subaru Ice Silver Metallic (G1U)
The Ice Silver has been dazzling Subaru drivers for almost a decade. Its silver shade comes with a blue tinge that gives the color an effect that lives up to its icy name. Some Ice Silver owners report that the color fully shifts to blue in snowy or overcast conditions. If you want the full silver shade, a warmer environment is best for this gorgeous ice queen.
Ford Ingot Silver Metallic (UX)
Ford’s beautiful Ingot Silver Metallic was introduced back in 2010. This color moves across the spectrum, going from almost white in sunny climes to gray in darker areas. While Ingot Silver Metallic has all but disappeared from Ford cars, it remains one of TouchUpDirect’s most popular silver touch up paints!
Honda Lunar Silver Metallic (NH-830M)
From Morning Mist Metallic to Modern Steel Metallic, Honda is no stranger to a gorgeous neutral hue. But there’s something about their Lunar Silver that just pops. It has a glow almost as good as its namesake. Worried about dirt showing on your silver car? Some Honda drivers say that the Lunar Silver hides the everyday wear and tear well.
Lexus Atomic Silver Metallic (1J7)
Introduced by Lexus in 2015 on the GS, IS, LS, NX, and RC, the Atomic Silver Metallic has made great strides in the last nine years. This wildly popular silver is another shade that changes colors depending on the light. Many Atomic Silver owners report an almost gold sheen in certain lights. Beyond its beauty, the Atomic Silver Metallic shade enhances car visibility in various lighting conditions, offering an added layer of safety for Lexus drivers and pedestrians alike.
Toyota Silver Sky Metallic (ID6)
This shade was introduced in 2001 and is the oldest paint on our list. 23 years later, the Silver Sky Metallic still adorns the surfaces of Toyotas everywhere. This dynamic silver began its life on the Sequoia and Tundra. Eventually, it found its way onto everything from the Sienna to the Rav4. Some Toyota drivers report that the tones Silver Sky Metallic respond to the environment around it, drinking in and reflecting its surroundings.
Applying Silver Touch Up Paint Like a Pro
As we are a touch up paint company, we thought it would be a good idea to run through the basics of car paint repair (silver or otherwise). You might find this sort of DIY work a bit difficult, but we’re here to run you through the basics of car paint repair.
1. Determine the size of the scratch. Assess the scratch to choose the appropriate applicator. Use a Pen applicator for scratches the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. A Brush applicator is ideal for areas the size of a quarter or smaller. For large panels, Aerosol spray is recommended.
2. Test the paint. Before starting the touch up process, test your paint on the testing card, including the Clearcoat, to ensure you have the correct match.
3. Apply Primer if necessary. If the damage on your car shows metal or substrate, apply Primer to the target area to help the paint stick to the car’s surface. Cover the damaged area with 2 to 3 even coats of Primer. Allow it to dry for 15 to 20 minutes before proceeding.
4. Add the Colorcoat. The Colorcoat is the actual color of your car. Apply 2-3 even coats, letting it dry before adding the next coat.
5. Finish with Clearcoat. You know the drill by now. 2-3 even coats with 15 minutes in between to dry. This layer adds a glossy shine and provides durability, protecting the paint from the sun and everyday contaminants.
6. Allow the Clearcoat to dry. Wait 48 hours for the Clearcoat to fully dry before applying any wax or polish to the area.If you need silver touch up paint for cars, look no further than TouchUpDirect.
