What is the Polishing Kit?
TouchUpDirect customers have been asking us for a greater shine on their paint job for years. After some serious R&D, we unveiled the TouchUpDirect Polishing Kit. The Polishing Kit is here to make your car’s finish even glossier and professional looking.
When Do I Use The Polishing Kit?
If your car’s paint job isn’t shining as much as you want, try using our three step process to give it that special gloss. We also created this kit to combat the dreaded Orange Peel effect that sometimes plagues paint jobs.
What is Orange Peel?
Orange Peel is the nickname for a dull and rippled effect that sometimes appears on your paint job. It was given that name due to its resemblance to the bumpy surface of an orange peel. This effect was caused by improper painting techniques and the application of too much Clearcoat. The Polishing Kit was designed to get rid of Orange Peel while also restoring the maximum amount of shine to your paint job.
What’s In the Polishing Kit?
- 2 Sanding Pads (5,000 Grit)
- Drill Adaptor
- Red Polishing Pad
- Blue Polishing Pad
- Bottle of Gloss Restorer
- Bottle of Final Step
- Microfiber Cloth
Is There Anything Else We’ll Need?
Yes. You will need your own corded or battery operated drill and a cup of water to dip the sandpaper into.
Why Do I Need Sandpaper?
The TouchUpDirect Polishing Kit actually provides users with our specially designed sanding pads. Getting rid of Orange Peel requires a gentle grit sandpaper that can work on the Clearcoat without interfering with the Colorcoat paint beneath it. Our 5,000 grit sandpaper makes this process much easier to smooth out micro uneven surfaces in your Clearcoat.
What Does the Gloss Restorer Do?
This is the polishing compound that will do most of the work in making your paint job shinier.
What Does the Final Step Do?
The Final Step is a bottle of mild polish that we use at the end to bring out the next level of gloss. It’s also a wax that helps protect your paint job from the elements.
How Do I Use the Polishing Kit?
Using the sanding pad, smooth out the top layer and reduce the orange peel effect. Repeatedly dip the pad in water and use a circular motion on the damaged area. Ideally, the area will get more dull as you go.
Wipe the surface down with the microfiber cloth and prepare your drill. Assemble your drill extension, backing plate, and cordless drill. Attach the Red Polishing Pad to your drill. Apply a dime sized drop of Gloss Restorer to the pad. Make sure that the polish is smeared to reduce fling when you turn on the drill. Using the drill, apply a medium light pressure to the surface. The drill rotates clockwise, so that the drill and the panel go outwards on the edge. Put pressure on the outward part so that the buffing pad goes outwards. That way, there is less chance of you burning the edge.
Attach the Blue Polishing Pad to the backing plate and apply a dime sized amount of the bottle of Final Step and polish the entire part again. Spend about 5 to 10 minutes on this polish.
