America’s Favorite Rides: Top 5 Most Purchased Car Models and Their Signature Colors
People need a lot of different things out of their vehicle. Some want raw power. Some want something practical. Some just want a car that can handle road trips where you go off-road so you can reach a commanding view on top of a mountain. We can get a little glimpse into the mind of the American driver by looking at the bestselling cars of last year, 2023. And since we’re just crazy about paint, we’re also going to dig into our database and let you know about the brand’s most popular car color. Here are the Top 5 most popular vehicles in the USA (and America’s favorite car colors).
1. Ford F-Series
The Ford F-Series has been around since 1948 and is currently in its fourth incarnation. This legendary line of trucks all began with the Ford F-150, but their lineup expanded over the decades to include models like the F-250, F-350, & the F-450. The higher the number goes, the more heavy duty the truck becomes. Ford F-550 and up are built for heavy duty commercial & industrial needs. Each model is highly customizable, with variants that favor everything from luxury to off-roading to simply a stronger hauling capability. Each vehicle in the F-Series offers a strong performance and an impressive list of features, including adaptive cruise control, Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, a driver information center, forward collision alert, and a strong haul and towing capability. All of these factors and more have led to the F-Series becoming the best selling vehicle in the United States. In 2023 alone, they sold a combined 750,789 units. But it’s the Ford F-150 introduced 76 years ago that remains the jewel in the F-Series’ crown.
Ford’s Favorite Color: The Oxford White (YZ/Z1/M6887)
Crisp and clean, this Oxford White color is on trend. White has been the bestselling car color in the US for a couple years now, as consumers have shifted to purchasing neutral tones. While it doesn’t hide dirt as well, small scratches and blemishes are less easy to see on a white paint job. It’s versatility and timeless look have made the Oxford White the choice for Ford drivers of every model.
2. Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevy Silverado truck was introduced in 1999, just before the new Millennium. It offers many different trim levels and models that cater to the driver’s needs. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, & 3500 differ in towing and payload size, with 3500 being the most heavy duty. Even the most basic 1500 offering, the WT, is still an incredible heavy duty work truck used by industries and businesses all over the USA. The Silverado LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels have ascending levels of luxury and comfort. The Silverado High Country models are the pinnacle of this series, offering incredible features like a chrome trim, heated front and rear seats, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features. The ZR2 and the LT Custom Trail Boss focus more on off-roading, with better traction from its four wheel drive and improved ground clearance from its off road suspension. As an LT trim offshoot, the LT Trail Boss offers slightly more comfort than the ZR2.
Chevrolet’s Favorite Color: Summit White (GAZ/WA8624/50U/50)
Man…there’s a lot of white trucks rolling around the US. Also known as Interstellar or Olympic White, the Summit White exterior colors aren’t popular not just among Chevy users. This particular color code can also be found on GMC, Buick, and Cadillac models. General Motors uses this gorgeous color for many of their vehicles.
3. Ram Pickup
What can we say? America loves trucks. Ram Trucks have a wide range of models with an assortment of payload and engine options that make sure the tracks are good for everything from daily driving to hauling a massive amount of product. The RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500 models are all incredibly popular, with the higher models being the more heavy duty trucks. The 1500 is considered more versatile, offering both comfort and utility. Much like the F-Series and the Silverado, you can also customize your cab size. A regular cab has a single row of seating, valuing cargo capacity over seating. A Quad (or Double) Cab is a good balance, with two rows but smaller rear doors than on the next level up. The crew cab has full sized doors ad lots of leg room for your passengers. A bigger cab size means a smaller pickup bed and vice versa, but you can usually customize your bed length size to be longer. From Tradesman to Laramie to Limited, Ram Pickups offers amenities and luxuries that make it one of the leaders in the automotive industry.
Ram’s Favorite Color: Ram Delmonico Red Pearl Tricoat (PRV)
Such a simple color code for a complex red car paint. This bold and sophisticated deep red color is also a Tricoat. A Tricoat means that you have a special extra Colorcoat layer that adds a special effect, like Candy or Pearl. The Tricoat in the Delmonico Red Pearl gives a fascinating pearlescent sheen to that dark red.
4. Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 has been a fan-favorite ever since it was introduced to the world in 1994. While the RAV4 gets its name from the four wheel drive that was installed in some of its models (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive), this current generation boasts an all wheel drive. Other standard features include cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and smartphone integration for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. While its models and trims offer a variety of amenities, luxuries, and other upgrades, this generation of Rav4 is notable for its offering of more electric options. Toyota originally offered an electric Rav4 in very limited quantities all the way back in 1997. Made widespread in the previous generation, the plug-in & hybrid versions of this recent 5th generation have taken it up a notch. The RAV4 Hybrid offers great fuel economy while the electric RAV4 Prime uses its combination of electric motors and a gasoline engine makes for a driving experience unlike any mother.
Toyota’s Favorite Color – Magnetic Gray Metallic (1G3)
We love a gray color. You don’t write 3 entire blogs about the color gray unless you love it. What is it about this color that is captivating car enthusiasts everywhere? While many favor a more matte color of gray, Toyota users have flocked to this stylish gray mixed in with metallic flakes. These metallic elements catch light in a different way, giving the Magnetic Gray Metallic a unique shimmer that enthralls anyone who sees it.
5. Tesla Model Y
The sleek and streamlined Model Y has the peak performance, efficiency, and technology that has made Tesla cars so popular. Introduced in 2020, the Model Y is all electric and can be charged at home or at one of Tesla’s Supercharger stations. At one of these Supercharger stations, you can get up to an 80% charge in just half an hour. Much has been made of Tesla’s hands free driving system with even the base models have basic autopilot features like cruise control and lane-keeping. But while you can add more self-driving mechanics for additional costs, you’re going to have to put in a little work because a completely self driving Model Y does not exist yet. Even though you technically have to drive it yourself, the Tesla Model Y is an incredibly impressive vehicle that has come to dominate the EV market.
Tesla’s Favorite Color – Pearl White Tricoat (PPSW)
Well…we’ve got another elegant white car paint and another pearl Tricoat on the list. Let’s talk a little bit about how a Tricoat works. In the modern automotive paint system, there are usually 3 layers: the Primer, The Colorcoat, and the Clearcoat. A Tricoat slips in an extra Colorcoat after the first. While we love that deep, complicated Delmonico Red, a white Tricoat really brings out the iridescence in the pearl effect.
