Tips For Every Adventure: Road Trip Risks
We here at TouchUpDirect are crazy for a good road trip. Maybe you’ll head on over to the beach or go visit hidden gems that people overlook. Perhaps you’ll just hit the open road with no plan and explore the world. We know that you’ll get a good story out of your journey. And while we are excited for all of your trips, we want your car to come out of it looking its best. These are just a few of the things you have to look out for on your road trip.
Road Trip Risk #1: Road Grime
Forgive us for stating the obvious but the road is simply unavoidable on a road trip. The issue here comes from the fact that you are driving on a road with other cars. Another car near you might kick up dirt, gravel and road debris that batters your paint job. This could cause unsightly scratches and chips that mar the perfect exterior of your car. You don’t want your sweet ride looking beaten down and scratched up at the end of your trip so here are a few things you can do to prevent and fix your road grime issues. For scratches and chips, we suggest our Touch Up Paint Pens, Brushes, and Combos. These versatile applicators can handle the abrasions gained on your trips and a simple DIY touch up process will have your paint job looking pristine. If you want to take measures to try and avoid the road debris issue, maintain a distance between yourself and the other cars on the road when you drive. The distance reduces the chance that the debris will meet your car. You might want to also install mud flaps or splash guards. This will help to minimize the debris kicked up by the other cars.
Road Trip Risk #2: Tar
Tar is vital to keeping our roads safe and sound but it can really do a number on your car. While usually found where road crews are patching up a damaged street, tar can also be a danger to your car if you’re taking your trip on a particularly hot day. When temperatures rise, tar can soften and become more adhesive, making it easier for it to adhere to your car’s paint and other surfaces. If it hardens on your car, it can leave unsightly dark spots or streaks or rough patches on your paint job. Prolonged exposure to tar over the course of time can lead to chemical reactions that weaken the paint and Clearcoat, potentially causing discoloration or even corrosion over time. Vigilance is a good way to avoid a tar stain. Avoid freshly paved construction areas. But if driving through those areas can’t be helped, check your car for tar when you arrive at your destination. Wiping it off quickly could save you a world of aggravation. If it has already dried, we would suggest a tar remover and a microfiber cloth. If that doesn’t work, you may need to consult a professional detailer.
Road Trip Risk #3: Rubber Debris
On highways, especially at higher speeds, tires generate heat and wear down, releasing small particles of rubber onto the road surface. Vehicles passing over this debris can pick up some of it, which may stick to the paint or other exterior surfaces. Much like road grime, you can reduce exposure to rubber debris by keeping a healthy distance from the other vehicles. If you notice rubber debris on your vehicle, it’s best to remove it as soon as possible. Use a gentle car wash soap and a microfiber cloth or sponge to gently scrub the affected area.
Road Trip Risk #4: Nature’s Revenge!
So you want to hit the road and see the great outdoors? We don’t blame you for wanting to see the majestic landscapes. But do you know what else is lurking out in nature? Bugs. You can go flying own the road at top speed but you’re going to get bugs splattered across your beautiful paint job. You’re also a moving target for birds, who will desecrate your car with their droppings. The horror! Okay, we’re being hyperbolic but insect remains and bird droppings do have acids that can etch into the paint if not removed promptly, causing stains and damage. Make sure you clean off the insects and bird droppings with soap, water, and a microfiber cloth as soon as possible.
